Tell AZ legislators: it's time to stand for children.
On 3/23, AZ Senate Education committee will hear a long-overdue bill requiring clergy to report child abuse.
This is huge. Under current law, clergy need not report suspected child abuse if they learn about it through confession. You may recall this clause being exploited by Mormon church officials in Bisbee, who in 2019 were caught covering up for a parishioner that sexually abused his children, including an infant.
Thanks to the bipartisan duo of Senators Victoria Steele (D-9) and Paul Boyer (R-20), we may have a chance to junk this dangerous "clergy privilege" once and for all.
Senator Boyer is known for his legislative advocacy to create statutes which protect victims of child abuse, standing strong in the face of extreme pressure from fellow GOP members in 2019 to extend the statute of limitations for abuse cases. Rumor has it that members of the GOP are being pressured to doom Senator Steele's HB2494 legislation by boycotting its hearing. So we need to build major energy around this issue now.
What can we do? For starters, let's all contact Senators Steele and Boyer. Give them the props they deserve and encourage them to hang in the fight. And let's contact the rest of Senate Education committee, urging them to stand on the side of victims of abuse.
(And if you are a Request to Speak user, don't forget to sign in FOR HB2494 before Tuesday.)
