Today Rebecca Hill resigned from Peoria Unified School District Governing Board.

Hill is the Member who:

  • Illegally quoted scripture at board meetings (including a passage calling for the death of non-Christians), exposing the district to lawsuits — until seemingly getting shut up behind the scenes
  • Told parents to un-enroll from the district because she couldn’t pass a trans bathroom ban
  • Tried to hold school staff pay hostage because she lost the bathroom fight
  • Voted against a free computer science training program for schools from Microsoft because the program’s website expressed commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Tried to prevent sending school counselors to a professional development conference because it had sessions on equality and anti-racism.

People like you spoke up in public comments, emails, phone calls, and editorials about all this. You got fired up. The kind of fired up Christian nationalists aren’t used to being on the receiving end of. We don’t know if that had anything to do with Hill’s decision to quit office to be “closer to family.” But she’s likely to leave office remembering it wasn’t fun playing “culture warrior.”

Superintendent Steve Watson will appoint the next board member. He’ll be hearing from Christian nationalists about what kind of member to appoint. He should hear more loudly from us. PUSD constituents can contact him at superintendent@maricopa.gov.
