Developments this week made it clear what state offices could dramatically reshape our lives if Christian nationalists are elected into them. Secretary of State candidate Mark Finchem--running for the office that certifies and governs elections--started the week making anti-Semitic posts and finished by spreading "Big Lie" conspiracy theories during a debate. He also revealed he is being interviewed by the Justice Department and the Jan. 6th committee about his alleged involvement in the coup attempt. Gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake called for a law banning teaching about sexual orientation and gender identity in grades K-3. Superintendent candidate Tom Horne railed against a resource supporting LGBTQ+ youth, espousing religious right talking points about “parental rights." And to top it off, a Pima County judge just ruled that the state can now enforce a near total ban on abortion. So why are we actually encouraged about this election? Because also this week, school voucher opponents reportedly turned in enough signatures to let voters decide on vouchers in 2024. Once again, organizers on the side of secular government showed that history and the will of the people are still on our side. Arizonans widely support democracy, reproductive freedom, and secular schools. We can turn the tide on all these issues in 2022... as long as we're involved. We set up candidate forums to help you learn more about these races: We hope to see you there. And don't forget to register to vote (or update your voter information) by October 11th. |
