| | As the AZ Legislature argues about the budget, here are some actions you can take right now: Tell Senator Mark Kelly to Oppose the SAVE Act: Senator Kelly has yet to oppose the SAVE Act (HR22), which mandates birth name voter registration. This would disproportionately impact married women, requiring millions to re-register with marriage/divorce certificates. The bill also disenfranchises those lacking birth certificates or unable to register in person, including the elderly and military families, and those who cannot afford to pay administrative costs of obtaining these documents. Contact Senator Kelly and ask him to oppose the SAVE Act and protect voting rights. Email or call 602-671-7901 in Phoenix; 520-475-5177 in Tucson; 202-224-2235 in DC. - SB1269 Allows volunteer school chaplains to replace trained social workers; takes away parents’ rights to manage children’s religious education, and tracks students’ religious affiliations.
- SB1256: Prevents state agencies or contractors from providing or requiring DEI in hiring, training and promotion, and promotes white Christian nationalism.
- SB1584: Forces public schools hiring policies to be based solely on “merit” and encourages individuals to sue for claims of reverse racism. Would lead to discrimination based on religion, sexual orientation, etc
Thank Governor Hobbs for vetoing these bills that violate church:state separation: - HB2058: Exempts adult students from vaccine requirements based on personal beliefs, not science.
- HB2063: Schools must tell parents about ways to be exempt from vaccine requirements creating a public health hazard.
- HB2062: Removes gender-related terms in AZ law and replace with sex-related terms, effectively erasing trans, non-binary and intersex people.
- HB2126: Requires health care provider to give parents of minors access to electronic data, including records of procedures that do not require parental consent. Could keep minors from accessing contraceptive, sexual health, gender-affirming care.
- SB1584: Forces public schools hiring policies to be based solely on “merit” and encourages individuals to sue for claims of reverse racism. Would lead to discrimination based on religion, sexual orientation, etc
- HB2670: Requires health education in grades 7-8 to include fetal development, but doesn’t include info about birth control, abortion, consent, etc.

 | Secular Education Association Have you heard of LifeWise Academy? This evangelical organization provides religious instruction to students in public schools during school hours, in Arizona and around the country. LifeWise offers bible-based "Character Education" courses in order to reach "unchurched students" as young as kindergarten age. They also lobby to pass legislation that forces schools to adopt policies that take kids out of class for religious instruction. A group of parents got fed up with these attempts to indoctrinate their kids in public school settings and formed the Secular Education Association. They'll join us this Friday at noon to discuss how they're taking a stand. Click here to register for this virtual presentation |

| | U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals: Marana Unified School District's First Amendment Policy The First Amendment has long been a contentious area of law, especially when it comes to its application in public schools. While discussions over the inclusion of religious topics and materials, use of public property for religious purposes, or student and teacher speech may come to mind, today’s discussions are increasingly focused on school district policies that were developed to prevent harassment of teachers, administrators, and others by community members and parents. On March 5, 2025, the U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals weighed in on one such matter that arose from the Marana Unified School District (MUSD) in Hartzell v. Marana Unified School District. In this case, Rebecca Hartzell, whose children are enrolled at Dove Mountain K-8 CSTEM school, was banned from the school grounds after she allegedly assaulted the school principal, Andrea Divijak. Hartzell has previously sought opportunities to get involved in volunteering at Dove Mountain, and she claimed that she was banned in retaliation for protected speech in which she repeatedly criticized the school district, Dove Mountain school, and school administrator. Divijak and MUSD argued that Hartzell was banned because of her conduct that violated school policy, namely that she assaulted Divijak. Read the rest of the article on Secular AZ's Substack |

| | SECULAR NEWS FROM AZ AND BEYOND SCOTUS watch: On April 30, the Supreme Court is reviewing a case regarding St. Isidore of Seville Catholic Virtual School in Oklahoma, which seeks to become the nation's first religious charter school. The Oklahoma Supreme Court previously ruled against St. Isidore, citing the separation of church and state and the use of public funds for a religious institution. Supporters argue excluding religious schools violates the Free Exercise Clause, while opponents emphasize that charter schools should be secular. Read more. Run for library board (because Christian nationalists certainly are): Arkansas Republicans passed a bill allowing Governor Sanders to fire the State Library Board after they resisted book bans pushed by Christian nationalist Jason Rapert. Rapert, appointed by Sanders, sought to defund libraries with "obscene" books, targeting LGBTQ+ themes. The board's resistance led Rapert to advocate for its abolition, giving the Governor direct control. The bill, passed swiftly, allows Sanders to appoint replacements, effectively enabling stricter book censorship in Arkansas libraries. Read more. More religious ≠ more happiness, says Phil Zuckerman (and science): The World Happiness Report consistently ranks highly secular Nordic countries like Finland, Denmark, and Sweden as the happiest, despite their declining church attendance and faith in God. While "happiness" in this context may mean contentment, rather than exuberant joy, these nations boast strong social welfare systems, low inequality, and high degrees of freedom. The data suggests that societal well-being and happiness are not dependent on widespread religious belief or practice and, in fact, that secularism complements happiness. Read more. Yes, they're coming for your birth control: Arizona's own SPLC-designated hate group, Alliance Defending Freedom, is urging the Department of Health and Human Services to cut ties with the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), aiming to redefine and restrict insurance coverage for contaception. ADF also objects to ACOG's maternity care protocols, citing concerns about DEI and "critical race theory." HHS recently cut funding for research on abortion impacts and maternal health, and halted data collection on pregnancy risks. This is all straight out of the Project 2025 playbook, which proposes limiting birth control access. Read more. |
