Actions for This Week

Phew... crossover week has ended, and so have the chances for almost half of the 1,800 bills introduced this session. Unfortunately, many bills that threaten church:state separation have advanced. Now is the time to speak up.

Please take a minute to log into RTScontact committee members, or contact your own representatives directly and fight these bills:

  • Oppose HB2112: Would require proof of age before accessing pornography on the Internet. Problem: Who decides what constitutes "pornography?" Opens the door to ban LGBTQ-related content, reproductive health info, sex education, HIV/AIDs info, etc. Use RTS and contact members of the Senate Judiciary & Elections Committee before Wednesday.
  • Oppose SB2062: Would remove gender-related terms in AZ law and replace with sex-related terms, effectively erasing trans, non-binary and intersex people.Contact members of Senate Government before Wednesday.
  • Oppose HB2113: Would ban the display of certain flags, such as Pride and BLM flags, on public property. This bill targets the LGBTQ+ community. Contact members of the Senate Government Committee before Wednesday.
  • Oppose HB2018: Allows private schools to receive taxpayer funds to training teachers, in what amounts to a giveaway to religious schools like Grand Canyon University. Contact members of Senate Education before Wednesday.
  • Oppose HB2728: Allows courts to order DUI defendants to attend a religiously based program. Contact members of the Senate Public Safety Committee before Wednesday.
  • Oppose HB2191: Changes zoning restrictions to allow churches to build housing on their properties, only requiring 40% of housing to be low-income. This bill is likely a gift to a particular mega-church that's encroaching on a low-density neighborhood. Contact your own representatives directly.
  • Oppose HB2216 and HB2439: Forces taxpayers to fund fake "pregnancy clinics" that are a front to push anti-choice propaganda and incorrect healthcare info based on a specific religious perspective. Contact your own representatives directly.
  • Oppose HB2547: Bars state funding to any healthcare provider that promotes or performs abortion, even to save the mother’s life. Contact your own representatives directly.
  • Oppose HB2681: Adds requirements to medical providers before and after prescribing abortion medication, including that it must be prescribed at an in-person visit. Contact your own representatives directly.
  • Oppose SB1298: Allows for broad definition of religious-related activities (not just worship) to receive get tax breaks, including include education and housing. Opens door for government funding of religious schools. Contact your own representatives directly.
  • Contact Reps Alma Hernandez (D-20) at ahernandez@azleg.gov/602-926-3136 and Consuelo Hernandez (D-21) at chernandez@azleg.gov/602-926-3523 to ask why they support HB2126, a bill pushed by Christian nationalist lobbyists which would require health care providers to give parents of minors access to all electronic data - including records of procedures that do not require parental consent - which could keep minors from accessing contraceptive, sexual health, and gender-affirming care.

Thank you for defending separation of church and state.

Bending the Knee

We were so disappointed to read reporting from Lookout this week documenting how Maricopa County Community College is closing to comply in advance by disbanding LGBTQ+, diversity, equity and inclusion student groups.

MCCC Chancellor Steven Gonzalez announced Friday that  he nation's largest community college system, will no longer provide funding for instructor or staff-led groups to attend conferences related to race, gender, or national origins; will disband all affinity groups related to diversity, equity, and inclusion; will remove all groups focused on expanding diversity or equity; will remove all language associated with race, gender, or sexuality from the MCCC website; and alter bathroom signage.
