| | It's the last week for Committee hearings and, unsurprisingly, AZ lawmakers are still pushing bills that advance white Christian nationalism and forward the goals of Project 2025. - Oppose HCR2025: GOP response to the passage of Prop 139, restoring abortion access; HCR2025 would make it harder for Arizonans to amend their state constitution, thus undermining direct democracy and silencing the will of the voters. Contact your representatives.
- Oppose HCR2042: Would prevent school districts from specifically hiring BIPOC educators or having clubs related to DEI, prevent state contracts to BIPOC-owned companies, and ban content related to history, DEI, and certain topics such as diversity and inclusion from schools. Contact your representatives.
- Oppose HB2058: Exempts adult students from vaccine requirements based on personal beliefs. Not based in science or facts; creates public health hazard. Use RTS and contact members of Senate Rules by Monday 3/31.
- Oppose SB2063: Schools must tell parents about ways to be exempt from vaccine requirements. Not based in science/facts; public health hazard. Use RTS and contact members of Senate Rules by Monday 3/31.
- Oppose HB2700: Requires curriculum with a "specific focus on the Gulf of America" for high school graduation. This is politicized misinformation. Use RTS and contact members of Senate Rules by Monday 3/31.
- Oppose HB2724: Requires schools to cooperate with indoctrination/recruitment efforts by “patriotic youth groups,” including presentations during instructional time, posters hanging in schools, etc. Schools cannot deny a group/speaker based on mention of religion. Use RTS and contact members of Senate Rules by Monday 3/31.

| | | A Threat to Democracy: HCR2025 HCR2025 would raise the threshold for amending Arizona's constitution from a simple majority to 60%, undermining direct democracy, targeting marginalized communities, and limiting protective amendments. Notably, HCR2025 carves out an exception for repealing the recently passed abortion rights amendment, Proposition 139, requiring only a simple majority. This is a retaliatory attack on voter-approved abortion access and we need to speak out against it now. HCR2025 is a power grab designed to silence the majority and entrench minority rule, further restricting essential rights and stifling direct democracy. Read more about HCR2025 then tell your representatives how you feel about this harmful bill. |

 | "Lager with a Lawyer" – A Secular AZ Community Event Join Secular AZ Tuesday, May 7th from 6-8p for an evening of enlightening conversation, community, and casual drinks at Lager with a Lawyer, a special event where you’ll get the chance to engage directly with two sharp legal minds working on the front lines of church:state separation and constitutional rights. Our guest lawyers are Dianne Post, Secular AZ’s own Legal Director, a fierce advocate for secular policy and human rights, and Robert McWhirter, nationally recognized constitutional attorney and frequent national media contributor, bringing insightful, often witty commentary on civil liberties, criminal justice, and the U.S. Constitution. This is your chance to bring questions, share concerns, or just enjoy an evening of thoughtful discussion in a relaxed setting with others who care about defending democracy and secular values. We're not charging for this event, but your suggested contribution of $10 or more supports Secular AZ’s ongoing legal and advocacy work across the state. |
