| | Hi Secular Fam, Welp, the Republican-led AZ Legislature is on vacation AGAIN, even as the budget deadline looms... but there are still actions you can take this week. First, thanks for speaking up against Prop 123, an attempt by the AZ GOP to thwart the will of the voters (yet again!) and shove universal ESAs into the AZ constitution by tying voucher expansion to teacher pay. As of now, it looks like Prop 123 may be (mostly) dead, thanks to widespread opposition. Let's ensure we don't see a miraculous resurrection! If you haven't yet, contact your lawmakers' offices and tell them to only support a clean version of Prop 123. Over the last week, there've been multiple reports of masked federal agents taking immigrants as they leave court hearings, after a judge has dismissed their cases. Those who are less at risk of being targeted by ICE are needed to stand up and offer protection to our neighbors. Borderlands Resource Initiative and Puente offer rapid response trainings on how to help. Multiple trainings are scheduled; the next one is on May 28 at 6pm in Phoenix. More info and RSVP here. |

 | The Dumbing Down of U.S. School Boards What's the latest at the Peoria Unified School Board? Last time we checked, they're considering rejecting a (free, proven, effective) career-building program for students because it's offered by that noted hotbed of Marxist/socialist/communist/wokeism, the...Chamber of Commerce. Yes, you read that right. Anyone else think it's really weird when school board members advocate for things that limit students’ access to beneficial, already-paid-for, evidence-based services? Unfortunately, that's the hottest trend amongst members of Cult 45/47. Despite actual experts researching, studying, and publishing best practices, these cultist school board members reject the research and best practices. Click here to read more about the 🤡show |

| | | Christian Indoctrination in DVUSD Hey, secular supporters in Deer Valley Unified School District: A Christian nationalist organization has plans to indoctrinate your students during regular classroom hours. LifeWise Academy has infiltrated Arizona public schools, and is moving to execute Bible lessons during the school day in DVUSD. If you don't want your children being told they're going to hell if they don't believe, that LGBTQ people are "sinners," on school time in a school setting, it's time to take action. Learn more here. If you're a parent with students in DVUSD, we want to hear from you. Contact us at info@secularaz.org. |

| | | | SECULAR NEWS Definitely not a grassroots movement. Ever notice how the same old tired, bigoted school board policies conveniently pop up everywhere? Shocking, I know. Turns out, it's not spontaneous combustion. The Lookout exposed the Arizona Coalition of School Board Members – apparently, a fan club for far-right groups – is orchestrating this anti-LGBTQIA+ crusade. They're pushing identical, "model" proposals to restrict affirming guidelines and shove conservative dogma into curriculums, especially targeting trans, nonbinary, and gender-diverse students. So, when you see "parental notification policies" magically appear in Humboldt Unified and Mesa Unified board meeting agendas, just remember: it's not grassroots effort that represents the local will of the people. Instead,, it's part of a grand, national scheme. Read more. Healthcare providers file lawsuit to expand abortion access in AZ. Despite the fact that voters overwhelmingly passed the Arizona Abortion Access Act, several restrictions to accessing reproductive healthcare remain on the books. Arizona doctors have filed a lawsuit challenging several state abortion restrictions, arguing they violate the constitutional amendment approved by voters in 2024. The suit targets laws mandating a 24-hour waiting period, forcing two clinic visits, banning abortion for fetal diagnoses, and prohibiting telemedicine for medication abortion. Plaintiffs contend these medically unnecessary barriers disproportionately harm vulnerable communities and undermine patient care, directly contravening the recently enshrined right to abortion in Arizona. The Republican tax bill that just passed the House cut Medicaid coverage for gender transition care, extending beyond minors to include adults. The legislation alters the Affordable Care Act by prohibiting states from designating "gender transition procedures" as an "essential health benefit," potentially impacting many relying on Medicaid for critical care. This move is a direct assault on the healthcare access of transgender individuals. Read more. Who woulda thunk it? In news that surprises absolutely no one who's paying even the least bit of attention, Arizona's brilliant $1 billion ESA voucher "experiment" is predictably siphoning funds from high-performing public and charter schools, not just the "underperforming" ones it supposedly targets. Turns out, giving away tax dollars for private schools, homeschooling, art supplies, or jet skis primarily benefits those already opting out of public education anyway. Now, even high-performing districts are losing students and positions, proving that creating a "two-tiered" system is a smashing success... for the already-rich and those who want to burn down public education in Arizona altogether.
