Is a Candidate a Christian Nationalist?

Last Friday, we talked to author Andra Watkins about the dangers of Project 2025 (watch her presentation here). Andra emphasized the importance of digging deeper when candidates proclaim their faith... specifically, to determine if they subscribe to Christian nationalist beliefs.

From Andra's popular How Project 2025 will Ruin Your Life, here are some questions to consider:

  • Where does the candidate worship? What causes does their church publicly support? Often, Christian nationalist churches put their extreme views on their websites and social media.
  • Is the candidate a member of church leadership? Christian nationalist candidates may bring up that they are deacons, Sunday School teachers, or group leaders, so they appear to be "walking the walk."

  • Is the candidate involved with organizations such as The Heritage Foundation, Alliance Defending Freedom, Susan B Anthony Pro-Life America, Moms for Liberty, Turning Point USA, or Center for Arizona Progress?
  • What kinds of social media posts does a candidate make? Christian nationalists often to post Bible verses, share their prayer lists, etc., and most can't resist sharing political viewpoints.

These questions are just the start; be sure to check out Secular AZ's election resources.

Phoenix Pride 2024

Secular AZ had a great time at Phoenix Pride last weekend! We met so many amazing Arizonans, underscoring just how much we love the creative, inspirational, beautiful people of our wonderful state.

We wanted to give a big "thank you!" to all who volunteered at our booth, as well as everyone who stopped by to say hi. We're so heartened by the outpouring of support for separation of church and state!

Together, we're strong.

Election Update

The election is less than two weeks away. Voting has already started in Arizona — what's the latest?

Howard Fischer, political reporter for the Arizona Capitol Times, joins us this Friday, October 25, at noon (AZ time) for an update on the latest election news.

Please join us for this Zoom presentation and bring your questions for Howard. Pre-registration is required.

The Lack of Empathy Doesn't Help

Every week, Jeanne summarizes school board meetings so you can see exactly what's going on. And  trust, there has been no shortage of idiotic behavior at meetings, and candidate shenanigans, both off- and online.

For instance, just in the last few weeks the Scottsdale school board race has resulted in dozens of signs being stolen, destroyed, or defaced, as well as out-of-control unfounded attacks on social media.

A group of bigots participated in a candidate event earlier this month. A teacher exodus is taking place in the Liberty School District, apparently due to district leadership. A former board member from Litchfield Elementary School District lost his lawsuit against the district. The sign shenanigans are happening in Pima County, too.

Then there's the Peoria Unified School District Board. PUSD board meetings continue to provide spectacular displays of selfish behavior that exemplify what's on the line for school districts throughout Arizona.

From turning down grant money rejecting partnerships because of "woke," to suggesting a return to the days of "separate but equal" (yes, you read that right), there's a real problem brewing.

In a nutshell, “the toxic effects of individualism and lack of empathy are destroying our public school system, and in turn, all of society.” It all boils down to selfish individualism.

Are You Scared?

Halloween is just around the corner — but the real scary stuff is religious extremists' efforts to endanger our freedoms and rights, like:

  • Book bans to censor and silence critical perspectives.
  • Attacks on the transgender community that threaten their very existence.
  • Extreme abortion bans that undermine bodily autonomy.

These are the terrifying realities born from white Christian nationalism. This isn’t just a passing fright—it’s a grave threat to a diverse and inclusive Arizona. At Secular Arizona, we’re taking a stand to combat the horrors of this rising movement and protect the separation of church and state.

Your donation supports our work to push back against white Christian nationalism and defend human rights for all.

Will you join us in this critical fight by making a donation today?
