Public Education Under Threat

We're barely two weeks out from the election and we're already seeing reports of Christian nationalism infiltrating schools across the country. But let's get real: As Arizonans, we've been seeing concerted attacks on public education for years.

From massive (though voter-opposed) voucher expansions — rife with fraud and waste — that funnel tax dollars to unaccountable religious charter schools, to elected leadership targeting educators with bogus and racist conspiracy theories, Arizona has long been ground zero in the battle for public ed. Unfortunately, already vulnerable communities bear the brunt.

Now, efforts to tear down the public education system are ramping up across the country as the Trump regime prepares to take power. In Texas, the State Board of Education is pushing curriculum that's centered on Christian ideology. As Hemant Mehta puts it, Texas' religion-infused "Blue Bonnet Curriculum" effectively turns every classroom into Sunday School.

The news out of Oklahoma is alarming, too. There, Superintendent of Public Instruction Ryan Walters has made the news for 1) attempting to spend over $3 million purchasing bibles for every classroom; 2) insisting that those bibles be Trump bibles; 3) actually purchasing 500 Trump bibles and making them required reading for AP Government classes; 4) forming a new Office of Religious Liberty and Patriotism; and 5) requiring students to watch videos of himself praying for Trump.

It's... a lot. Fortunately, many brave school districts are refusing to play the videos, and the state AG says Walters has exceeded his authority.

In Kentucky, Nebraska and Colorado, voters rejected attempts to expand vouchers. We applaud the voters who understand the damage vouchers cause. For example, here in Phoenix the Roosevelt School District is thinking of closing five schools due to budget shortfalls.

We do have to point out the irony, though, in that two states that voted against voucher expansion also voted for Trump... quite similar to how majority of Arizonans voted to protect abortion rights but also voted for Trump and Republicans, who are directly responsible for taking. Away. Abortion. Rights. Make it make sense.

To top it all off, yesterday Trump announced his pick to lead the Department of Education: former professional wrestler Linda McMahon. Her "qualifications?" Let's see. There was that one time, when she was in college, when she thought about becoming a teacher. Then there was that time she lied about having an education degree. And she was the chair of the voucher-pushing, public-school-dismantling America First Policy Institute. Oh, and she's accused of covering up an employee sexually abusing minors, so she should fit right into Trump's cabinet.

Of course, Trump says he's eliminating the Department of Education, so Linda will be out of a job soon enough.

In the meantime, we'll keep fighting for our public schools. Secular AZ Executive Director Jeanne Casteen reports on school board meetings, but she's just one woman and she could use your help. Let us know if you want to sit in on meetings and help our members stay informed.

Hijacking History

Who decides how history is recorded? Those with power write history... and they always find a way to make themselves look like the sympathetic and righteous party.

Professor Kathleen Wellman wrote a book about how the Christian right teaches history and why it matters. She joins us Friday, November 22, at noon to discuss. We hope you'll join us too.

Now More Than Ever: Knowledge is Power

Last week, Pima County Librarian Kate DeMeester-Lane  joined us to talk about all the work libraries to do ensure everyone has access to the information they need and that their stories can be told.

In an era defined by book bans and misinformation, libraries are more important than ever.

Meet Your Elected Extremists

This month, Arizonans voted a slew of conspiracy theorists and extremists into elected offices across the state. Excellent reporting from Jerod MacDonald-Evoy illustrates just how prevalent these formerly out-there beliefs have become in recent years, especially amongst evangelicals

If you want to learn more about the connections between extremist Christianity and conspiratorial thinking, watch this presentation on our YouTube channel.

What does all this mean for Arizona? Expect a toxic stream of disinformation and Q-anon-style weirdness to seep into bills and hearings in the upcoming legislative session.  Though many conspiracy theories may seem ridiculous or even laughable, this misinformation has potential to cause harm.

After all, legislation and public policy should never be based in unscientific beliefs, religious fundamentalism, and flat-out nonsense, much of which is informed by racism, bigotry, anti-Semitism, and misogyny.

Get ready to fight back. Make sure you're signed up to use Request to Speak, so you can take a stand against magical thinking at the State Capitol.

Hate in our Nation's House

Today is Transgender Day of Remembrance, a time to honor those who have lost their lives to acts of anti-transgender violence. Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) chose this day to  introduce legislation that would ban transgender individuals from using facilities on federal properties (such as bathrooms) that don't correspond with the sex they were assigned at birth.

In response, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) released a statement showing that he was on board with the discrimination. Mace states that her bill is a direct response to the election of the first openly transgender member of congress, Rep. Sarah McBride (D-DE). Mace also says that the legislation is also meant to "protect women." This is utterly cynical and disingenuous.

In reality, Mace's legislation is in line with continuing attempts by the right wing to stoke hatred against and demonize transgender individuals, a population who already experience an extremely high risk of violence and discrimination.

In the past few months, we've heard from the Arizona Transgender Youth and Parent Organization about the challenges faced by transgender kids, and about the importance of gender-affirming care. In response to Mace's hate, we recommend supporting a trans-positive organization; Lookout offers a great list of resources
