Last call to sign and turn in abortion access petitions

Arizona for Abortion Access is calling for all petitions to be turned in this weekend. If you’re still carrying one or haven’t signed it yet, this is your last chance to help get repro rights on the ballot. Find a petition drop-off/signing hub here.

Focus on rural Arizona

Some experts are saying election outcomes in November will depend on rural Arizona voters — and that the state Democratic Party is ignoring these areas at its peril.

One of our goals is to get out as much as possible in places outside Phoenix metro. We just went to Pride events in Bullhead City and Bisbee to connect with people there.

Do you feel alone in being a pro-secular or nonreligious person where you live? Secular AZ partners with several state-wide secular groups. Many are social, service-oriented, and a few are involved in activism.

If there's no secular group in your area and want help trying to find like-minded people, please let us know,

School Boards

Prepare for backlash at school boards over Title IX

The Biden administration’s update to Title IX strengthens legal protections for LGBTQ+ students starting in August. Online chatter in Christian nationalist spaces seems to show that hate groups may be organizing to attend school board meetings, and conservative school board members are facing pressure to resist the new law.

Concerned constituents are advised to go to their school board meetings, even if just to sit in support of equality. Let us know what you see.

Candidate Forums

We’ve been hosting forums in key school districts to see where school board candidates stand on on a myriad of issues, including separation of religion and government.

However, we’re getting a lot of declined RSVPs this year, and a big reason seems to be that school board candidates fear backlash from religious extremists.

If you know of a school board race where you think candidates would want to talk about secular issues, let us know what district, and we’ll invite them to a forum! (Reply or email info@secularaz.org)

Hobbs vetoes "detransitioning" bill

Governor Hobbs has vetoed SB1511, a Republican bill which sensationalized the idea of gender “detransitioning” by requiring health insurers to cover the seldom-used procedure.

Thank you to all who joined in our call to action to contact Governor Hobbs. Thank her for her decision at (602) 542-4331 or on her Online Comment Form.

Summer of Solutions w/ LOOKOUT

The past four years, certain conservatives have pushed "parental rights'' to suppress equity education. But who is left out of the conversation? Who is expressing support for parents that have LGBTQ+ kids? And what tools are parents using to protect themselves and their children?

On July 21st, Secular AZ’s Jeanne Casteen will be part of a panel asking these questions organized by pro-secular LGBTQ+ news outlet LOOKOUT.

Invitations will be sent to both free and paid LOOKOUT subscribers. (Tickets offered first to paid subscribers.)

Film recommendation: Praying for Armageddon
