Secular AZ to New Times: “Kids are being told by elected officials that their life does not matter.” Our efforts were recently highlighted in the Phoenix New Times in a piece about how a Phoenix school district (Dysart) issued a resolution saying it opposes the new Title IX protections for LGBTQ+ students. We pushed back against the idea that one student’s religious beliefs about gender justifies the discrimination of another. “They're sending the message to the families, to the trans members of that community, that you're not worthy, that you're not human, that I won’t even acknowledge you,” said Executive Director Jeanne Casteen. “These kids are being told by elected officials that their life does not matter.” Other Arizona school districts are expected to follow Dysart’s lead, including Peoria Unified School District. Constituents are advised to contact their board members and attend school board meetings to voice support for Title IX protections. |

Protecting Public Privacy in School Board Meetings During livestreamed school board meetings in Arizona, public commenters are often recorded, raising safety concerns as their clips circulate online. Some agitators also use these meetings to display political messages, which can be disruptive. Several districts have adopted new camera setups to address these issues, creating a safer and more focused environment. We’re calling on others to join them. |
