The Real Monsters This Halloween

This Halloween, as we revel in the spooky and the eerie, let’s remember the real monsters we face. These aren’t just the ghosts and ghouls in our imaginations—they’re right here, pushing dangerous legislation rooted in white Christian nationalism.

Religious extremists are driving horrific bills that endanger our freedoms and rights:

  • Book bans to censor and silence critical perspectives.
  • Attacks on the transgender community that threaten their very existence.
  • Extreme abortion bans that undermine bodily autonomy.

These are the terrifying realities born from white Christian nationalism. This isn’t just a passing fright—it’s a grave threat to the diverse and inclusive Arizona we cherish. But at Secular Arizona, we’re taking a stand. We’re launching a fundraiser to combat the horrors of this rising movement and protect the separation of church and state.

Your donation supports our work to push back against white Christian nationalism and defend human rights for all.

Will you join us in this critical fight by making a donation today?

Together, we can ensure that the only scary things this Halloween are the costumes and decorations—not the dangerous ideologies threatening our state. With your help, we’ll keep Arizona a place where freedom and dignity are protected for all people.

Thank you for standing with us!

Every dollar raised helps us combat the horrors of white Christian nationalism and build a future free from fear. Thank you for your support and commitment to this fight.

Wishing you a safe and spirited Halloween,
The Secular Arizona Team

Bodily Autonomy on the Line

This year, bodily autonomy is on the ballot. Please vote YES on Proposition 139, the Arizona Abortion Access Act, to ensure that abortion is legal and safe in our state.

Because abortion care is health care, and without access, women will die. We've already seen tragic deaths and horrific stories of suffering... all preventable.

Without protections enshrined in law, Arizonans will be forced to travel to other states to receive the care they need, as more than 170,000 pregnant people had to do in 2023 alone.

Forced birth laws are centered in narrow religious perspectives that are then forced on all of us, regardless of our own religious beliefs or lack thereof. This is unconstitutional.

These anti-abortion beliefs, rhetoric, and laws are rooted in oppression, and are an attempt to control women. Abortion bans do not protect pregnant people or their families; rather, abortion is medical care and an expression of bodily autonomy. Denial of abortion care violates human rights

Vote for bodily autonomy...

vote YES on Prop 139.

Know Your Candidates

This week, our friends at LOOKOUT identified *at least* 58 school board candidates across Arizona who are either endorsed by anti-LGBTQ+ organizations or who are campaigning against "gender ideology" — a term often used to bolster the false GOP talking point that public schools are teaching students to transition from the sex they were assigned at birth.

Research shows that political rhetoric, policies, and bills that target LGBTQ+ people cause great harm. This is especially true when it comes to trans youth, a population that already faces extraordinarily high levels of risk for physical and sexual violence.

LOOKOUT's disturbing findings underscore the importance of researching candidates' positions before voting. Secular AZ doesn't endorse candidates, but we do provide information and host weekly presentations related to elections, with guests like Dianne Post, Victor Aronow, and the League of Women Voters. Please watch on our YouTube channel.

How Project 2025 Will Ruin Your Life

Project 2025 has gotten a lot of press lately, despite the Trump campaign's efforts to distance themselves from it. But there's a reason why everyone's talking about it: It's a  bigoted, patriarchal Christian nationalist vision that will cause great harm.

We hosted "Project 2025: What You need to Know," which you can watch here. Learn even more this Friday at noon, when we're joined by author Andra Watkins.

Andra's been writing about the threats posed by Christian nationalism, Project 2025, the anti-abortion movement, and more on her Substack

We're excited for Andra to join us on October 18 to talk about how Project 2025 will ruin your life.

God and Monsters

Hey Secular Fam! Don't miss Jeanne's latest Substack, in which she opines on her love all things spooky season (even though she doesn't actually believe in gods or monsters!)

Here's an excerpt:

"Now, I DO believe that humans have a choice to behave like gods or monsters. I’ve seen examples of both, and I see way more self-proclaimed “Christians” behaving like monsters rather than modeling themselves after the teachings of Christ, their lord and savior

And let’s be honest here. Many evangelical Americans stopped worshiping Jesus when their orange demagogue descended on that golden escalator in 2015."
