Pregnancy as Modern Coverture

What does pregnancy look like after Dobbs? Professor Caren Morrison argues that abortion bans serve to suspend women’s legal existence while they're pregnant, much like the common law doctrine of coverture.

In common law, a married woman’s legal identity would be “covered” by her husband, making them "one" in the eyes of the law... and the "one" recognized by the law is the husband. "Fetal coverture" opens up a whole new world of health risks and legal peril, in which a pregnant person's legal identity is subsumed into that of their fetus.

Please join us on Friday, December 13 at noon as Professor Morrison discusses her research.

Education in AZ Under Project 2025

What will education look like in Arizona post-election? The goals of Project 2025, now known as Agenda 47, involve:

  • Eliminating the Department of Education
  • Abolishing diversity, equity, and inclusion programming
  • Establishing an online academy free from "wokeness or jihadism"
  • Ending federal funding for schools that serve low-income families
  • Eliminating the Head Start program and moving pre-school care to in-home child care
  • Ending Title IX protection for LGBTQ+ and transgender students
  • Registering educators and librarians who talk about LGBTQ+ and transgender books or issues as as sex offenders

Much of this boils down to funneling tax money away from public schools and into private and religious schools. In fact, the creators of Project 2025 used Arizona as a model of "universal school choice" to emulate on a large scale.

That AZ's voucher program is fraught with waste, abuse and fraud isn't a deterrent. Neither is the fact that our state's public schools rank dead last in the nation. Rather, the destruction of public schools in favor of privatization appears to be the goal.

Internship Opportunities

Secular AZ is now offering exciting internships in four key areas: Legal, Communications, Development, and Advocacy. As an intern, you’ll have the chance to make a real impact while learning valuable skills.

  • Legal interns dive into research and help analyze policies that protect the separation of church and state.
  • Communications interns create engaging content and help spread our message through social media and other platforms.
  • Development interns get hands-on experience with fundraising, donor outreach, and event planning.
  • Advocacy interns play a big role in grassroots campaigns, policy research, and building connections with the community.

These internships are a great way to gain real-world experience while making a difference. You can choose the area that matches your interests and work on meaningful projects alongside a supportive team. Whether you’re writing impactful messages, exploring legal challenges, or helping to grow our movement, you’ll leave with new skills and a deeper understanding of advocacy work.

Join us and be part of the fight for secular values in Arizona!
